LNER F5, GER M15R Holden 2-4-2T, Connoisseur etched kit. The kit is
for the F5 with the F4 cab, but would do the F4 with the F6 boiler too.
The F4 (M15), F5 (M15R), and F6 (G69) classes were closely related and
all have the same size wheels. The F6 was heavier with bigger tanks and
bunker, a side window cab and a boiler with higher pressure. The F5 was
produced by giving 30 of the 160 F4 Gobblers the boiler from
the F6. Two more acquired a new cab at the same time which confused the
LNER who thought they were F6, but they were lighter and became F5 later
to work the Maldon branches. As the F4 boilers (LNER diagram 33) expired,
77 acquired F6 boilers (LNER diagram 34) set at the lower pressure so
that they look like F5s but were still F4s. Some F4 later reverted to
diagram 33 boilers but most of these re acquired diagram 34 boilers. Wheel

The first 10 locos were Westinghouse braked, condensing passenger engines,
taking 10 spoke wheels from J67s, and the last 20 were shunters. Between
1939 and 1945, 7047 had a low pressure boiler and was considered to be
a J67/2. LNER first series numbers 7021-7040 shunters, 7041-7050 passenger.
7041 went to the WD as 70085 in 1939, and hence to Metal Industries at
Faslane. The rest became 8647-8666 shunters and 8638-8646 passenger. Condensing
was removed from all except 7041, 7043, and 7047 in 1937 and 8, but refitted
to 7048 and 7050 in 1940.
